29 weeks

In week 29, Derek and I completed our childbirth class.  We went into this not really knowing what to expect, but thoroughly enjoyed the weekend intensive class.  We practiced relaxation and breathing, labor positions, and talked about the different medications offered (yeaaah epidural!), birth plans, typical first labors and what to expect.  One interesting thing the Doula worked with us on that we really liked was labor positions and breathing techniques.  Contractions will last 60 seconds, so while lying in various positions on the floor, in chairs and on birthing balls, she had us "contract" for the full minute.  I never knew how long a minute could actually last...in total silence, it took forever.  With relaxing music and massage, it took no time at all.  So, Derek knows the physical kinds of things that relax me and we need to find some calm music, or other distractions, for D-Day (or B-Day, if you will).

I must admit, Derek and I both got a little nervous when discussing length of labor and after watching a video of a woman who planned on zero medication during her natural birth...only to become a little hysterical (by hysterical, I mean crazy), begging for relief.   But every anxiety went away when we took the hospital tour and saw two newborn girls being wheeled to the nursery.  As the Doula said...pain with labor is:

P (purposeful)
A (anticipated)
I (intermittent)
N (normal)

Its a nice acknowledgement that women experience pain with childbirth, but also offers the perspective and reminder that it is manageable and doable.  Our bodies were made to do this. Keep your eye on the prize!

At 29 weeks, our little one now weighs about 2 1/2 pounds and is a tad over 15 inches long from head to heel. She is being compared to the weight of a butternut squash, which is extra fun for my Dad and me since he called me "Butternut" growing up (and still does from time to time).

I'm still enjoying my spicy and sweet foods (without heartburn...knock on wood) and have gained about 17 lbs. to date.  We're still watching and feeling Madeline move around in there, and I'm sleeping much better.  My back will ache from time to time, but usually only after sitting or standing for long periods of time.  Friday marks both 30 weeks (10 more weeks?!  WOAH!) and 30 years old for Mama B.  I will hit 31 weeks just as Daddy B turns 31 the following week.  Funny how that worked out!  Our 30's will be nothing less than awesome.

  1. Just cannot get over how quickly she grows now from week to week! Because we don't see you every day, the change is even more dramatic for Dad and me. You continue to glow and look absolutely beautiful, Lindsay. So proud of you and Derek as you prepare for Madeline's birth--just the right amount of awe AND practicality! And am really glad that you enjoyed your birthing classes; they were invaluable for Dad and me before you were born. Great preparation for a joyful time! (Just cannot believe that you're almost 30 years young! Soon you will know how deeply you have been loved those 30+ years!)
