To Benjamin on his 1st birthday...

A year ago, we laid eyes on your for the first time.  You were born at 9:49 on a cold, gray Tuesday morning, and shortly thereafter, your daddy carried you over to the operating table so that I could get a good look at my baby boy.  You took my breath away.  I had never seen such a beautiful boy.  Your eyes were wise and kind and you looked at me as if you knew exactly who I was.  You were crying, so I spoke to you…I wished you a happy birthday and told you how much we loved you.  You stopped crying and got really still.  All of a sudden, I could feel you nuzzling against my face, so I asked your daddy if he was pushing you closer to me.  He wasn’t.  You snuggled with me.  Only minutes old and you snuggled your mama – your cheek against mine.  It was one of the most precious moments I have ever experienced.

You adjusted quickly at home and fit right in with our family from the get go.  You were born ready to explore, live life…and of course, cuddle.  You have the kindest little smile and the brightest eyes that tell the story of your intrigue and curiosity.  You love your family (especially big sister, Madeline!) and you love to explore.  You have proven to be very independent and you get so frustrated when we try to intervene.  We love that about you, frustration and all.  You, like Madeline, march to the beat of your own drum.  It’s what every parent wants for their children.

I love the way you cut your eyes at us and grin and squeal when you’re excited.  The way you kick those chubby little feet and the way you stiffen your body when you’re mad.  The way you cuddle into our necks and run your fingers through our hair, or pat our backs.  Just like you’ve done since our first official introduction.  You’re a gentle, kind soul, sweet Benjamin.  I can’t put into words how grateful we are that God sent you to us.  How blessed are we?

As we wish for your sister, we wish for you a lifetime of good health and happiness;  the ability to find joy in your surroundings;  for you to have and receive compassion;  to know God, and appreciate His blessings;  to have confidence and to make wise decisions;  and to always know and feel just how much you’re loved.

What an honor it is to be your parents and to know you and love you.  We can’t wait to see what the next year has in store!

All our love,

Mama & Daddy
